Rob McElhenney jokes about failure threat as Wrexham co-owner explains why he and Ryan Reynolds have expanded football empire into Mexico and Colombia

Rob McElhenney has joked that fans will “kill you” if flopping as owner, but has explained branching out into Mexico and Colombia with Ryan Reynolds.

    The ‘It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’ actor got a taste for football investment when joining forces with ‘Deadpool’ star Reynolds for a surprising sporting adventure at Wrexham. They have overseen back-to-back promotions in North Wales and are chasing down a historic third in 2024-25.

    While taking aim at the Premier League there, McElhenney and Reynolds have – alongside fellow members of the Tylis-Porter group, such as Eva Longoria and Mesut Ozil – pumped more funds into Liga MX side Necaxa and Colombian outfit La Equidad.

    Quizzed on as to why he and Reynolds continue to expand their football empire, McElhenney said: “We just fell in love with the sport. We fell in love with the idea of being able to fall in love with a community, and that community just happens to fall in love with a sport that we love. We just become so invested in the entire experience.”

    While McElhenney has bought into football fandom, he said when asked what happens when things go wrong: “They’ll kill you. They’ll murder you!” That has not been an issue at Wrexham so far, with a meteoric rise being enjoyed by the Red Dragons.
