Former Netherlands international Quincy Promes has found a new club despite fighting extradition to his homeland on alleged drug smuggling charges.

  WHAT HAPPENED?

  The 32-year-old is linking up with FC Dubai United in the second tier of football in the United Arab Emirates. They have teased the Dutchman’s arrival in a social media video, with Promes joining as a free agent after severing ties with Russian outfit Spartak Moscow.

  Promes has to remain in the UAE after being arrested for driving away from an accident during a Spartak training camp in the region. He was also arrested at the behest of the Netherlands as they seek to return him to Europe as part of a long-running legal case.

  The UAE are yet to honour the extradition treaty that exists between their nation and the Dutch. It is now being claimed that Promes has signed a one-year contract with FC Dubai. He has previously won 50 international caps for the Netherlands, while also representing the likes of Ajax, Twente and Sevilla.

• WHAT NEXT?

  Promes was convicted by a Dutch court in February of complicity in cocaine smuggling, leading to a six-year prison sentence being handed out. He has also been convicted of stabbing his cousin in the knee during a fight in 2020 – which carries an 18-month term being bars – but both convictions are being appealed.
